Electric fence installation is the cheapest way to change animal behavior, and the easiest fencing job in the world to get wrong. The fence is a circuit, and the circuit is not finished at the wire. It runs out through the animal, into the soil, and back to the ground rods, which is the half almost nobody builds properly.

We install and repair electric fence on livestock ground across Anderson County and Greenville County. What our electric fence installation includes

An electric fence quote should list the ground system as plainly as it lists the wire. If it does not, ask why.

  • Walking the ground with you and counting the real run length, including every cross fence

When electric fence installation is the right call

Electric fence earns its keep in a narrow set of jobs, and it is very good at all of them:

  • Cattle are pushing a woven wire line down at the bottom or rubbing posts loose
  • A horse leans on, chews or reaches over an otherwise sound fence
  • You are rotating pasture and need temporary cross fencing that moves in an afternoon
  • Dogs are digging out under a fence and a buried apron is not practical
  • You want to cover a long boundary for a fraction of the cost of woven wire
  • Deer or raccoons are hitting a garden and a physical barrier would have to be eight feet tall

The common thread is that electric fence is a training tool. It teaches an animal where the line is, and within a week or two the animal stops testing it. That is also its limit: it changes behavior, it does not physically stop anything.

Grounding is the number one faultThe most common cause of a weak fence is not the charger. It is too few ground rods, rods driven too shallow, or corroded clamps at the rod.

Sizing the energizer

Energizer boxes are marketed in miles of fence. That number assumes a single clean wire with nothing touching it, which describes no fence anyone owns. The honest measure is stored joules. Size it against total conductor length, counting every strand and cross fence separately, then add capacity for the weeds leaning on the wire by July.

Undersized is the usual mistake. A charger that barely copes on day one has nothing left when the grass comes up, and the animals find that out before you do.

Power source

Plug-in mains energizers are the most powerful, the most reliable and the cheapest to run, so if there is power within reach that is what goes in. Battery units suit a remote paddock and need someone to remember the battery. Solar is the answer on a far boundary with no power, provided the panel is specified against the shortest, wettest weeks of the year.

How we install an electric fence

We build the return path first. Everything after that is straightforward.

  1. Walk the ground, measure total conductor length and pick the energizer from that number
  2. Choose the ground rod location: damp soil, low ground, well clear of the building electrical ground and buried water lines
  3. Drive the rods full depth, spaced apart from one another rather than clustered
  4. Join the rods with continuous wire and galvanized clamps, then run the ground lead to the energizer
  5. Mount the energizer under cover, with a lightning arrestor and a cut-out switch
  6. Set posts and insulators, keeping the wire clear of posts, brush and anything steel
  7. Run the conductor at the height that suits the animal, then tension high tensile against braced ends
  8. Fit gate handles or under gate cable so openings do not break the circuit
  9. Test voltage at the energizer and again at the furthest point, and show you how to test it yourself

The twenty minute routine we leave you with

  • Walk the line and knock down vegetation touching the wire
  • Test at the far end with a fence tester, not by touching it
  • Check the ground rod clamps for corrosion once a year
  • Look for a cracked insulator arcing to a steel post after a storm

A fence tester is the cheapest tool on any farm and the only way to know the fence is doing anything at all. A hot fence nobody checks is usually an off fence, and livestock work that out long before the owner does.

Grounding an electric fence in Piedmont clay

An electric fence completes its circuit through the animal and back through the soil to the ground rods, which makes the soil part of the fence. Dry sand is a poor conductor, and that is why fences on the coastal plain often underperform. Anderson County sits on Cecil series red clay, and clay that holds moisture is good news for the return path.

We still do not take it for granted. Anderson gets about 48 inches of rain a year against a US average of 38 and has no dry season, but a hot spell in August still dries the top foot of ground out. Rods go in where the soil stays damp, in a low spot rather than against a barn slab, and full depth rather than cut short at the first resistance. A common manufacturer specification is several feet of ground rod per joule of output, and almost every underperforming fence we look at has one short rod instead.

Weather is the other local factor. Humid subtropical summers here mean thunderstorms, and a fence line is a long antenna across open ground. A lightning arrestor protects the energizer, and keeping the fence ground field away from the building electrical ground and from buried water lines is what keeps stray voltage out of the barn.

What drives the price of an electric fence

Electric fence is the lowest cost per foot of anything we install, and the price still varies more than people expect:

  • Total conductor length, counting every strand and every cross fence, not the perimeter distance
  • Energizer size in joules, which is the single biggest hardware line
  • Power source, with solar units costing well above a plug-in of the same output
  • Number of ground rods and how hard the ground is to drive them into
  • Conductor type, from poly wire at the bottom to permanent high tensile
  • Number of strands, since cattle may need two and goats or predator control need many more
  • Post type and spacing, and whether insulators are being fitted to wood, steel or existing posts
  • Braced ends and in line tensioners on any permanent high tensile run
  • Gate crossings, which need handles or buried under gate cable
  • Whether we are adding to a sound existing fence or building the whole line from nothing

Adding a single hot strand to an existing fence is one of the least expensive jobs we do, and it often solves the problem the owner was about to spend thousands replacing a whole fence to fix.

What an electric fence is not suitable for

We would rather turn the work down than sell a fence that will not do the job. An electric fence is a psychological barrier. It works by teaching, so it fails wherever the animal is not in a state to learn.

  • It is not a pool barrier. South Carolina builds to the International Residential Code, which requires a physical barrier at least 48 inches tall with self closing and self latching gates
  • It will not hold a genuinely panicked animal, which is why the physical fence still matters on a road frontage
  • It is a poor primary fence for a dog that bolts, because a determined dog takes the hit going out and will not take it coming back
  • It is not a security fence and it does not keep people out
  • It works poorly on an animal standing on dry ground or deep bedding, which breaks the return path
  • It is a bad fit for a suburban lot where children, delivery drivers or a neighbor could reach the wire
  • It does nothing for privacy or screening

There is an honesty point about upkeep too. This is the one fence type that needs someone to check it, and if nobody on the property is going to pick up a tester now and then, a physical fence is the better investment even though it costs more at the start.

Adding a hot wire to a fence you already have

This is the job we get asked for most, and it is the best value in the trade. Offset brackets stand a single strand a few inches off the face of the fence you already own, at the height the animal meets it. Cattle stop leaning on woven wire and rubbing corner posts loose. Horses stop chewing rail ends and reaching over the top. A low strand near the ground stops dogs and hogs digging under. The fence keeps doing the physical work, and the strand stops the behavior that was destroying it.

Why is my electric fence weak or not shocking?

Four out of five times it is the ground system, not the charger. Too few rods, rods driven only partway in, rods in ground that has dried out, or corroded clamps where the wire meets the rod. The current has to come back through the soil, and if it cannot, the animal barely feels anything.

The rest of the time it is vegetation shorting the line, a cracked insulator arcing to a steel post, or a break in a poly wire where the filaments have snapped inside the plastic. We test at the energizer first, then at the far end, and the difference between the two readings tells us where to look.

What size energizer do I need?

Size it on stored joules against the total length of conductor you are running, counting every strand and every cross fence separately, then leave headroom for summer growth. Ignore the miles figure printed on the box, which is measured on a perfect single wire with nothing touching it.

Under buying is the usual error. A unit that is marginal in spring has nothing left when grass reaches the bottom wire, and cattle find the weak spot faster than you do. We would rather fit one size up than get called back in July.

Can I add a hot wire to my existing fence?

Yes, and it is usually the smartest money on the property. Offset brackets hold a single strand a few inches off the face of your existing woven wire, board or wood fence, set at the height the animal actually contacts it.

It stops cattle leaning a fence down, horses chewing rail ends and reaching over, and dogs digging under. The physical fence keeps doing the containment, and the strand stops the behavior wearing it out. It costs a fraction of replacing the fence, which is what most people are calling about when they ring.

Is an electric fence safe around children and pets?

A livestock energizer delivers a short, sharp pulse rather than a continuous current, and it is unpleasant rather than dangerous to a healthy person or animal. That said, we do not put electric fence where the general public, delivery drivers or small children can walk into it.

Where a hot line runs anywhere near a boundary, a road or a shared drive, warning signs go up and the wire goes where people are not going to brush against it by accident. If your fence line runs along a sidewalk or a neighbor's yard, tell us and we will design around it or recommend a physical fence instead.

Solar, battery or plug-in?

Plug-in wins whenever there is power within reach. Mains energizers give the most output for the money, they never need a battery changed, and they run through a wet week without dropping off.

Solar makes sense on a far boundary with no power, but the unit has to be sized for a gray Upstate January rather than a July afternoon, and the battery inside it is a consumable. Battery units are best kept for temporary cross fencing that moves with the rotation.

Will an electric fence keep my dog in the yard?

Not on its own, and we will not sell it as a dog fence. A dog that is chasing something will take the shock on the way out and then refuse to take it on the way back in, which leaves you with a loose dog and no way for it to come home.
