Anderson Fence Company is a fence company in Gantt, SC, covering both halves of what is a genuinely two sided community. Gantt counted 15,006 people in 2020 across about 9.8 square miles, which makes it the biggest by land area of the unincorporated places ringing Greenville. It sits in west central Greenville County, bordered on the northeast by the city itself and on the northwest by Dunean.

It also carries the name of a person rather than a mill. The community was named for Richard Gantt, born in Maryland in 1767, who settled in Greenville County after moving around the state. That is a small distinction with a real consequence: unlike the villages next door, Gantt was not laid out around a single mill gate, and the housing, the commercial frontage and the industrial ground toward Donaldson all developed on their own terms.

Two kinds of fence work inside one community

In the residential streets the job is what you would expect: four to six feet of chain link or wood around a back yard, a gate wide enough for a mower, a dog to keep in. On the industrial and commercial side, a mile or two away, the same company is quoting eight foot perimeters in heavier pipe with thicker fabric, gates sized for a truck, and sometimes controlled access on top of it.

Those are not the same fence with a different number of feet. The pipe wall thickness changes, the fabric gauge changes, the post spacing tightens, the footings get deeper, and top rail gives way to top tension wire or barbed arms depending on what is being protected. People sometimes ask for a commercial spec on a house and it is almost always the wrong buy. We say so.

  • Residential: height for containment, appearance from the street, a gate that clears the driveway slab
  • Commercial yard: height for deterrence, heavier framework, gates rated for the traffic crossing them
  • Industrial perimeter: long runs across uneven ground, corner bracing that holds a line for decades, access points planned around how vehicles actually move
  • Construction site: panel or driven post temporary fence that goes in fast and comes out on your date

9.8 square milesMakes Gantt the largest by land area of the communities immediately ringing Greenville, which is why one quote here can be a quarter acre back yard and the next a fenced equipment yard.

Getting equipment into an older Gantt back yard

A lot of the residential ground in Gantt is older small lot housing with the house set close to one side and a narrow gap on the other. That gap decides how the job runs. A towable auger needs real clearance to get to the back, and where it cannot fit, the holes get dug by hand and the material gets carried in. That is genuine work and it belongs in the quote rather than appearing as a surprise on day two.

We check three things on the walk round before pricing: the width of the tightest pinch point, whether there is a gate or a fence to come out first, and where the spoil from the holes can be stacked. On a tight lot the spoil is a real problem, because there is nowhere to put it, and hauling it out is a cost we would rather name up front than absorb by leaving piles behind.

Elevation here is around 958 feet and the ground is generally kinder than it is further north, but the soil is the same Cecil red clay that runs across the Piedmont. It holds a footing well and it drains slowly, so hole preparation matters more than fabric grade on a fence that has to stand twenty years.

A named community with no local government

Gantt has a name, a school catchment, a fire service and a place on the census map, but no council and no ordinance of its own. Fence questions land with Greenville County, with whatever is drawn on your plat and with the covenants attached to your deed. South Carolina has no statewide fence permit and no state height limit, so those are the only sources that matter.

On the commercial side that changes. A business fencing a yard on the frontage is usually dealing with a landlord's requirements, an insurer's expectations or a site plan condition, and the specification gets written to satisfy those rather than to satisfy a code. We build to whatever specification you are working to, and where you do not have one, we will tell you plainly what the site actually needs rather than selling the heaviest option on the sheet.

Questions we get asked

Fence questions from Gantt homeowners

You cannot get a machine into my back yard. Does that change the price?

Yes, and we would rather say so at the quote than discover it on install day. Where the side access is too narrow for a towable auger, the post holes get dug by hand. On red clay in summer that is slow, and on a long run it adds hours that have to be paid for somewhere. We measure the tightest pinch point on the walk round and price the job against it.

There are usually a couple of ways to soften it. Sometimes a section of existing fence can come out to let equipment through and go back at the end. Sometimes a neighbor will allow access across their drive for a morning. Where neither is possible, hand digging it is, and the fence is no worse for it. What we will not do is shorten the holes to save time, because a shallow post in wet clay leans.

I run a business off the main road in Gantt. What is the difference between a commercial and a residential chain link fence?

Almost everything except the appearance. Commercial framework uses thicker wall pipe and larger diameter posts, the fabric runs a heavier gauge, the post spacing tightens, the footings go deeper and wider, and the top of the fence is specified for the job, which might be top rail, top tension wire or barbed arms. Gates are the part people underestimate: a drive gate on a working yard gets used dozens of times a day and needs frame and hardware to match.

It costs more per foot and it is the right buy when the fence is protecting stock, equipment or access. It is the wrong buy around a house, and we will tell you that rather than upsell it. The reverse mistake is more common and more expensive: a residential grade fence around a working yard bends the first time something reverses into it.

Is there a height limit on a fence in Gantt?

Not one set by Gantt, because Gantt is a census designated place with no local government and no ordinance of its own. South Carolina does not set a statewide height limit either. What can apply is Greenville County, plus any restrictive covenants recorded against your deed, and those covenants are the part most people have never read.

There is also a practical limit that has nothing to do with rules. Sight lines at a driveway or a corner matter, and a tall solid fence right up against a drive makes pulling out blind. The City of Anderson writes that principle into its standards, keeping anything that blocks vision out of a sight triangle between 42 inches and 10 feet above the road. Whether or not it applies to your lot, it is a sensible thing to build to.
