Will you cut my oak's roots to get the fence in?
Almost never, and never without telling you first. We hand dig in the root zone and move a post six or eight inches when we hit something structural, then carry the line with a longer rail on that bay. On a site built wood fence that adjustment is invisible once the pickets go on, which is the main reason we recommend wood over panel systems on the old Greenville streets.
Where a root genuinely cannot be missed we lay out the choices instead of deciding for you: step the run around the trunk, end the fence short and return it to the house, or accept that we are cutting a root and the tree may show stress over the next few summers. A fence is not worth a hundred year old oak, and we will say so.
