Helene came through in the early hours of Friday 27 September 2024, and the region took winds up to about 90 mph. Around the early twentieth century neighborhoods close to downtown, plenty of fences are on their second or third owner and nobody remembers the year they went in. The boards tell you very little. A gray, cupped picket can be perfectly sound, and a board that still looks respectable can be finished at the bottom.
So we test instead of guessing. Every post gets a hand on it and a push. Anything that rocks has either gone at grade or lost its footing, and those are two different repairs. Can you repair a fence under a big oak without hurting the tree?
Yes, and it is most of what we do on the older side of Greenville. Any hole that falls inside a mature root zone gets dug by hand rather than augered, because an auger that catches a two inch root either stalls or tears out wood the tree still needs.
