My chain link fence is rusted along the bottom. Does the whole thing have to come out?
Usually not. On most older Easley chain link the fabric gives out long before the framework does, and galvanized posts set in concrete routinely outlast two sets of fabric. We kick and rock every post first, and if the steel is sound we pull the old fabric, hang new mesh on the existing line and stretch it back to tension.
The fabric is also the cheapest part of the system to change your mind about. If you are replacing it anyway, black vinyl coated mesh on those same posts costs a little more and looks considerably better against a house, which on a ranch belt lot is often the version people wish they had picked the first time.
Can you repair a fence in a mill village back yard with almost no room to work?
Yes, and it is normal work here. On the older streets a side yard is often barely wide enough to walk down, so posts, old concrete and damaged boards come out by hand and the new material goes in the same way. Nothing gets driven across the grass.
What it changes is the time, not the method. A fifty foot run on a tight mill lot takes longer than the same fifty feet on an open subdivision lot, and we quote it that way rather than pricing it as if a machine could get back there. You will hear that at the estimate, not on the invoice.
Is it worth repairing a twenty year old wood fence in Easley?
It depends entirely on where it has failed. Twenty years of Pickens County clay and about 48 inches of rain a year is a long innings for pressure treated pine, but a fence that age with two bad posts and sound rails is worth fixing, and the fix will hold.
